Fashion and sustainability are the future of the fashion industry.
It is no secret to anyone that fashion has a very significant impact on the environment. Indeed, the overproduction of fashion garments is the consequence of overconsumption and has meant a total collapse, at a planetary level. But why is it so important? In this article you will find the main reasons why fashion and sustainability are inseparable.
Materials and overproduction.
The overproduction of garments has created a lot of waste, particularly when it comes to synthetic products that the planet can no longer absorb. Garbage dumps full of textile products are found in the most exotic places on the planet. But what does it mean to wear sustainable fashion?
As we have already shown in our post a few weeks ago, wearing garments that last a long time, made with high quality natural fibers and therefore compostable and preferably made in local factories or at least in Europe.
For the clothes we buy to last a long time, they have to be made with high quality natural materials, long fibers. If we take the example of merino wool produced in Australia, the best batches are sent to be spun in Italy, from where we can buy to make very durable sweaters.
Using sustainable fashion also means producing them close to home. Because we can control production without the need for long trips with a high ecological cost. But also because we will produce with environmental and social control… local. Sustainability in fashion creates jobs locally and maintains knowledge and know-how in our countries. Selling value-added products is generating value on the spot.

Buy... Be sustainable.
Using sustainable fashion also means having a sustainable behavior with your clothes. The first step is to buy clothes made with high-quality natural fibers, close to home in factories that make sustainable fashion. But it is not only this, sustainable fashion is fashion that is recycled, or reused. It is reused when it is given to a third party or sold second-hand to extend the life of the garment. The second hand market is flourishing. More and more consumers prefer to buy higher quality second-hand products than new clothes in a fast fashion store. Surprisingly, many times the new garment will last less than the used garment. If I had to make a recommendation about buying second-hand, I would say: “only buy high-quality garments, it will be your best investment.” Another way to combine fashion with sustainability is to repair garments to extend their life. Patches and elbow pads will be the way to extend the life of your favorite garments.
The famous expression of “We are too poor to buy cheap” has many detractors who complain about the prices of fashion clothes. But these same ones are capable of spending a month’s salary in a fast fashion chain, the first Saturday after being paid. The right question is to know how much money they spend per month on clothing, how long, on average, the clothes they buy last, and how many clothes end up in the back of their closet without hardly ever having been worn…
Once the average budget has been studied, each one will realize that they could buy a quarter of the clothes they buy, dedicating the same budget per year and having many used clothes , but of good quality, to give away or sell second-hand.
This is a way to buy fashion in a sustainable way. The famous saying will become: “The planet is too endangered to buy cheap.”
